For her second collection, Beatrice Awurama Manatah got her inspiration from the national dress of Ghana, known as fugu, batakari or smock Traditionally it’s a woven tunic with an embroidered collar. It originated in the northern regions of Ghana, where it was worn by local kings. In recent years, the popularity spread throughout the country and eventually led the ministry of tourism in 2015 to declare every first Friday of the month as national fugu day. In the designer’s modern adaption the cut completely changed from tunic to cloak. These changes go in line with the brand’s principle to combine style and comfort and to build bridges between tradition and innovation.
